The Strands That Support Early Reading Development

When children learn to read, they are not just memorizing words on a page; they are developing a complex set of skills that must work together, much like the intertwined strands of a rope. Dr. Hollis Scarborough introduced the Reading Rope in 2001 to provide a clear visual for the science of skilled reading. The model divides reading into two major components: Word Recognition and Language Comprehension.

At Strands of Accelerated Reading (SOAR), we use the Reading Rope to guide our multisensory, structured-literacy approach. By strengthening every strand, we help struggling readers build the skills necessary for fluent, meaningful reading.

The Two Main Braids of the Reading Rope

• Word Recognition – the ability to decode and recognize words effortlessly.

   

• Language Comprehension – the ability to understand word meaning within sentences and stories.

The Strands of Word Recognition

Phonological Awareness – hearing and manipulating sounds in spoken words: for example, rhyming, segmenting, blending

Decoding & Spelling – matching letters to sounds and blending them into words; systematic phonics instruction belongs here.

Sight Recognition – instantly recognizing high-frequency words such as “the,” “said,” and “because,” freeing mental energy for comprehension.

At SOAR, multisensory, structured literacy techniques build these strands, enabling students to decode with confidence and accuracy.

The Strands of Language Comprehension

Background Knowledge – a child’s understanding of the world that anchors meaning.

Vocabulary – robust word knowledge, morphology, and context-clue strategies.

Language Structures – grammar and syntax that unlock complex sentences.

Verbal Reasoning – higher-order thinking skills such as inference and drawing conclusions.

Literacy Knowledge – familiarity with diverse text structures, from narrative fiction to informational articles.

SOAR lessons include discussion, explicit vocabulary instruction, and guided practice to strengthen these comprehension strands.

How the Strands Work Together

Explicit instruction in each strand gradually weaves a sturdy “Rope.” When any strand is weak, overall reading suffers; therefore, targeted intervention is essential.
